Dear Potential Coffee Farmer,
For most potential coffee farmers, fear of the unknown is bad news - and with good reasons.
Early 1990s, when farmers feared investing on coffee farming, Kenya's production reduced drastically from as high as 135 000 metric tonnes to less than 40 000 metric tonnes.
Now with scarcity of Kenyan coffee, demand has increased tremendously. Profits increased for those who understood the market demands.
Currently, Kenya coffee is the most sought after commodity in the global market. Kenya has the reputation to grow one of the finest Arabica coffees in the world. Kenya coffee is indeed, Kenya's green gold.
A European Union (EU) study on Kenyan coffee established that around 400 billion cups are consumed per year, most of which are sold in Europe where drinking coffee is an integral way of life.
Indeed, the global coffee consumption reached 128 million bags in 2007 and 130 million in 2008. Total consumption of coffee has grown by 2% per year and this trend is likely to continue.
The study adds that coffee demand in Middle East countries as well as in newly industrialized countries like China is increasing too.
Unfortunately, production in the coffee growing areas of Central, Kisii and parts of Western has declined steadily.
The only hope to revitalise the sub sector now remains with you - potential farmers in Rift valley (Narok, Bomet, Kericho, Nakuru, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, and Baringo counties).
This is great business.
An acre will give you more than Kshs.500,000 annually. If you invest in a 5 acre coffee estate you are assured of an income of Kshs.2.5 million annually.
To establish an acre requires a onetime investment less than Kshs.100,000 (This includes buying of seedlings, digging holes, and normal plant husbandly). It takes 2- 3 years for you to start harvesting. Coffee that was planted in 1960 at Ruiru is still producing.
To cut the long story short, this opportunity is now here.
How can you get in involved?
